The Grand Socco, from the Spanish meaning suk (market) is located at the entrance of the medina. The old residence of the Mendoub (representative of the Sultan) is there. The Embassy of Germany was also here in the 1940s. Today it is a courthouse with a magnificent garden. Centuries' old trees grace this historic place.

To follow the footsteps of famous celebrities such as Paul Bowles, Jean Genet, Paul Morand or Pasolini, nothing is better than a mint tea in the cafés of the Petit Socco. Also, there is the great mosque built in the 18th century on the ruins of an old Portuguese cathedral.

Originally it as the Mandoub palace (representing the authority of the Sultan). It was transformed into a museum by Malcom Forbes, with displays of great historic battles (Waterloo 1815,Dien Bien Phû, battle of the 3 kings, armies of Sultan Sultan Abdel Malek). Today it is reserved for "VIP Guests" visiting Tangier (Palais des Hôtes).

United States Legation This is the first American historical monument located outside the United States; It is a little palace right in the heart of the kasbah, offered in 1821 by Sultan Moulay Suleiman to the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe. It was called "consulate" to 1923, and afterwards took on the name of legation. Today it houses a collection of pictures on Morocco and old geographical maps, among with that of Leo the African. The museum covers the history of relations between the United States and Morocco. On display is the letter from George Washington to Moulay Abdallah, a collection of mirrors, works by Lecouteux and Ben Ali R'Bati Morocco's first "primitive".

Saint Andrew's Church In the 1880s, a collection was taken up for the construction of this church because a place or worship was lacking for the British who were beginning to come to Tangier. Sultan Moulay Hassan Ist made his contribution by offering the land. In 1884, the bell tower was erected, on the arch a prayer is engraved in Arabic.ss
